Basketball in the UK has not been able to keep away from the impact of Covid-19 and has felt the full force of the pandemic in many ways.
I spoke to Caroline Bullock Podcast co-host and analyst with FocusHoops to find out how current world events have impacted UK basketball and what the future looks like for the sport.
When asked if there were any major hurdles the sport may face going forward Caroline gave the following response.
“The funding issue is definitely one of them, the elite teams their funding relies on ticket sales and having people in the venues that are going to buy tickets, buy merchandise and products.”
This was then followed up by a way in which the sport and its teams were looking at alternative ways of generating revenue to try and make up for their losses.
“Some of the teams do have streaming services that they’ve set up, some are charging for that and I know there’s revenue streams that will go directly to the teams.”
Like many other sports in the UK particular football, basketball seems to be following in their footsteps by creating their own live streams and selling "virtual tickets" to fans in order to bring the match to them.
Only time will tell however if the sport will be able to stay financially secure as many clubs struggle with the consequences of fans being unable to attend live games.
